The South-South Parliamentary Caucus of the House of Representatives said the Federal Government is sincere in its amnesty offer to militants in the Niger Delat region of the country and called on all militants to embrace the offer.
Chairman of the Caucus, Chief Andrew Uchendu, said yesterday in Calabar that the Caucus was satisfied with Government’s implementation of the amnesty offer and its determination to ensure its success.
He recalled that when the Federal Government came out with the policy, the Caucus met and issued a statement that the amnesty offer was an opportunity to solve the problem of militancy in the region and encouraged the people to embrace it. “We are convinced that with this effort, the Federal Government is sincere and has the political will to carry out the policy, ” Uchendu said.
According to Uchendu, “We have so far watched the implementation of the amnesty and the number of militants that have embraced the policy and turned in their arms. We feel greatly satisfied that both sides mean well for the nation.
“We therefore call on all other militants that are yet to turn in their arms to do so in the interest of Nigeria and the development of the Niger Delta. We specifically appeal to Tom Polo and Ateke Tom that in the interest of the Niger Delta people that they love and the interest of their desire for the development of the Niger Delta, they should kindly yield and turn in their arms”.
